“Digital has made our work as journalists more efficient and
quicker. It has also enabled us to hear from Myanmar people
about what they want to hear more about. Unfortunately the
laws and policies are weak and don’t support us,” said a
speaker representing the media.
In regards to society:
“People with money have power online. Mixed with a lack of

men. This needs to go up. But at least we have this number to
try to improve on - whereas for persons with disabilities, we
don’t even know what the number is,” said Helani Galpaya
LIRNEasia.
“Although there are initiatives working for accessibility,
there’s always a problem which is that contents are not in
unicode and therefore are not machine-readable. So for example, text-to-speech and speech-to-text tools don’t work in
Burmese for persons with disabilities,” said Nyein Chan,
Phandeeyar.
The second day of the Forum on 19 January will identify an advocacy and action agenda for 2018.
“These are complex issues and it is critical that we work together to address them. The objective of Myanmar Digital
Rights Forum is to bring together all relevant stakeholders
annually to share and exchange on digital rights issues and
collaborate on solutions” said Ei Myat Noe Khin, Digital
Rights Program Manager at Phandeeyar, one of the coorganisers.
