From January 1, 2022, to July 1, 2025, social media platforms reportedly removed 37,845 instances of false information and 7,846 posts linked to 3Rs issues following the MCMC’s requests 208. Social media platforms have repeatedly been called to the MCMC’s offices over such matters during Anwar’s administration209. According to the Ministry of Communications, the removals also included the takedown of politically driven troll accounts that manipulated information to provoke racial and religious tensions210. In 2024, the MCMC claimed that a troll farm was aiming to tarnish Anwar Ibrahim’s reputation on social media211. Despite that claim, in October 2025, independent outlet Malaysiakini discovered at least 263 accounts participating in a coordinated campaign to artificially boost support for Anwar Ibrahim on his official Facebook page212. A coordinated inauthentic behavior network with a political agenda had previously been uncovered in 2022, when Meta found a network linked to the Malaysian police213. The police were alleged to have attempted to manipulate public discourse by setting up a “troll farm.”214 Following the discovery, Malaysiakini’s Facebook pages were suspended. According to Meta, the suspension was due to “a technical issue,” but no specific explanation was provided215. Malaysiakini also reported that Meta told them it found no evidence of policy violations related to Anwar’s Facebook page.
