The junta destroyed genuine political competition
by dissolving or blocking parties that won over
90% of seats in the 2020 general election, most
notably, the National League of Democracy
(NLD) and the Shan Nationalities League for
Democracy (SNLD). The junta ensured its proxy,
Union Solidarity and Development Party (USDP),
could dominate by default.
Even among the 34 parties that supported the
military’s 2021 attempted coup, only 8 won seats.
The junta forcibly dissolved 14 other parties
before polls, while the remainder lost seats.1 The
USDP captured the overwhelming majority of
seats; many without contest, and some without a
single voter, through fraud, coercion, electronic
voting machine manipulation, and violence,
Limited territorial control and public
boycotts make process a “joke”
The junta’s fake election failed even on its own
terms. It managed to conduct polling in only
39.86% of the country’s territory, excluding 67
entire townships and an additional 4,000 village
tracts and wards across 131 of the townships
where limited polling was held.2
Compared to the 2020 general election, the juntabacked Union Election Commission (UEC)
admitted they had almost halved the number of
polling stations from 39,963 to just 21,517
stations.3
