This demonstrates a wide variation between countries, highlighting that children’s experiences differ substantially across contexts, with similar caveats as in relation to overall prevalence. Perpetrators often employ sexual talk or sexual solicitation as part of a grooming process to manipulate or desensitize children. Grooming strategies typically involve misrepresenting their identity, building trust through attention and emotional validation, and gradually shifting interactions towards increasingly personal or sexual topics, including soliciting content from the child. It can be difficult for children to recognize these behaviours as abusive, given their gradual nature, especially if the perpetrator is someone they know or trust. The distinction between consensual and non-consensual sharing of sexual content is not always clear, particularly in relationships characterized by power imbalances, emotional dependence, or limited understanding of consent and privacy.
