How does abuse affect children's lives? Overview of analysis Both rounds of the Disrupting Harm survey asked internet-using children aged 12–17 about their mental health and well-being. This section examines the relationship between technologyfacilitated child sexual exploitation and abuse and selected well-being indicators. For these analyses, technology-facilitated child sexual exploitation and abuse were used as the exposure variables, and children’s well-being indicators were assessed as outcomes. Technology-facilitated child sexual exploitation and abuse: The seven-indicator binary measure for technology-facilitated child sexual exploitation as described in section one was used as the main exposure variable in the analyses. Mental health: The study assessed anxiety using the Generalized Anxiety Disorder 7 item (GAD-7) Scale. In Disrupting Harm I, a truncated version was used by including four items. Participants were asked: “In the last two weeks, how often did you”, followed by four response options including: • Feel fearful • Feel nervous • Feel restless, like you can’t sit still • Generally feel worried Participants could answer: “Not at all”, “Rarely”, “Sometimes”, or “Often” to each response option. A scalar variable was derived from the sum of the responses with “Not at all” coded as 0 and “Often” as 4, then standardized. This question was interviewer-assisted. In Disrupting Harm II, the full version of the GAD-7 was used: • Feeling nervous, anxious or on edge • Not being able to stop or control worrying • Worrying too much about different things • Trouble relaxing • Being so restless that it is hard to sit still • Becoming easily annoyed or irritable • Feeling afraid as if something awful might happen Participants could answer: “Not at all”, “Rarely”, “Sometimes”, or “Often” to each response option.
