How do children get support and recover? Overview of variables This section examines how children disclose technology-facilitated child sexual exploitation and abuse and the barriers they face when deciding whether to seek support or make a formal report, using the comparable seven-indicator measure described in Section 1. Analyses in this section are conducted at the incident level rather than the child level. This is because children may be subjected to more than one form of technology-facilitated child sexual exploitation and abuse. Each instance of abuse may have involved different disclosure and reporting decisions. To facilitate incident-level analyses, the data were reshaped so that each reported instance of technology-facilitated child sexual exploitation and abuse represented a single observation. Consequently, the numbers and proportions presented in this section refer to instances of abuse rather than the number of children who were subjected to technologyfacilitated sexual abuse. For each reported instance, children were asked whether they disclosed what happened to anyone. Those who said they disclosed were asked who they told. Those who did not disclose were asked about the reasons why they chose not to tell anyone. In both rounds of Disrupting Harm, children who reported disclosing an instance of technologyfacilitated sexual exploitation and abuse were asked: “Who did you tell about what happened?” Response options included: • I didn’t tell anyone about it • Father, step/foster father, or male carer, caregiver, or guardian • Mother, step/foster mother, or female carer, caregiver, or guardian • Brother or sister • Friend • Teacher or educator • Other adult I know and trust (e.g., coach, neighbour, doctor, or babysitter) • Religious leader (added in Disrupting Harm II, but excluded from these analyses) • Social worker • Helpline • Police • Other (please specify) • Don’t know • Prefer not to say Through Children’s Eyes Appendix 78
