This demonstrates a wide variation between countries, highlighting that children’s experiences differ substantially across contexts, with similar caveats as in relation to overall prevalence. Perpetrators often obtain sexual images or videos after adolescents share them within the context of a trusted or perceived relationship, or by capturing images or videos without the child’s knowledge or consent. They then distribute the images to humiliate, manipulate, coerce, or maintain control. Adolescents do not always recognize this as abusive; instead, when trust was violated through the non-consensual sharing of images, it was often followed by feelings of shame, guilt and self-blame, as heard in interviews. Young people described intense fear, shame and anxiety, often driven by uncertainty about who had seen the images, whether they continued to circulate, or if they might reappear in the future.
