Technology: Friend or Foe for Women of Myanmar
Recommendations
Since February 2021, Myanmar internet users have suffered from the digital repression
of the junta. Gender Equality Network and the Myanmar Internet Project have identified
the following recommendations for three critical stakeholder groups to facilitate their
advocacy for Myanmar women’s empowerment and online safety.
The international community and donor agencies are recommended to take action on
the following:
1.
Advocate to restore the right to use the internet in accordance with international standards as it is important for enhancing women’s empowerment.
2.
Advocate to local and foreign organizations to introduce tailor-made, context
sensitive digital security programs for women.
3.
Advocate for women internet users in Myanmar to regain digital freedom.
4.
Leverage their interventions against the military junta’s continued digital rights
violations and campaign of terror against the people.
5.
Donor agencies to provide increased funding for combating technologyfacilitated gender-based violence and conflict-related sexual violence – including
funding for awareness raising, referral services, GBV response service provision,
documentation and a reporting mechanism.
6.
Donor agencies to provide direct, multi-year, flexible funding for local women’s
rights activists and women’s rights organizations.
7.
Donor agencies to provide funding for implementing community-based
transformational programs for social and gender norms to eliminate the culture
of victim blaming and gender stereotyping.
8.
Donor agencies to support activities that enable secure communication and
coordination, including electronic devices, top-up credit, internet connection
and transportation costs for CSOs and women’s rights organizations.
