In a recent atrocity on 25 December, regime troops burned around 49 civilians detained alive to death in Hpruso township, Kayah State (Karenni State).22 The military’s airstrikes in the offensives against Karen National Liberation Army (KNLA) near Lay Kay Kaw, Myawaddy township in Karen State also left more than 5,000 local residents fleed and taking refuge in shelters in Thailand.23 The atrocities in 2021 clearly indicate that the Myanmar military’s acts do not comply with the characteristics and ethics of an army in line with international standards but those of a terrorist organization. As Myanmar people refrained from calling Myanmar’s Armed Forces “the military” and started branding it “the terrorist organization” instead of after realizing its inhumanity since February, we recommend in this report that international organizations should designate the military as a “terrorist organization”.
