Group 2 - Supporters of the Myanmar military and nationalist groups
In 2024, there were a total of 77 peaceful protests led by supporters of the Myanmar military and
nationalist groups. The number of protests per month is as follows: 51 in January, 10 in February, 6 in
March, 1 in April, 2 in May, and 7 in August. By state and region, the highest number of protests occurred
in Mandalay Region with 11 protests, followed by Rakhine State and Magway Region with 8 protests
each. Southern Shan State had 7 protests, and the Ayeyarwady Region had 6 protests. In Yangon
Region, Sagaing Region, Naypyidaw, and Kachin State, there were 5 protests each.
In addition, the Myanmar military was able to organize protests in many major cities across the states
and regions. Notably, following an incident where a member of the MNDAA (Myanmar National
Democratic Alliance Army) destroyed a pagoda, protests were organized across the country. Supporters
of the military and patriotic citizens led these protests in January and February 2024. A total of 51 cities
participated, with an estimated 30,000 people taking part in these demonstrations.
Number of Peaceful Protests by State and Region
On February 1, 2024, the third
anniversary of the military coup, promilitary supporters and nationalist
groups in Yangon rallied to show their
support for the Myanmar Army.
Among these protests, one in Pyin
Oo Lwin stood out, where a
nationalist monk encouraged Senior
General Min Aung Hlaing to step
down from his military position and
assume a civilian role. Throughout
February, protests in support of the
People's Military Service Law were
held in cities such as Yangon,
Mandalay, Kyaukse, Pathein, Bago,
Pyay, and Myawaddy, drawing
participation from thousands of
people.
In the northern Rakhine State, protests against the Arakan Army (AA) were organized in March, April,
and May, especially by local Muslims in areas with intensed armed conflict. These protests took place
in Sittwe and Buthodaung towns, with more than eight protests. Additionally, in March, persons from
Myanmar War Veterans Organization organized protests in southern Shan State's Hopong town,
