Internet freedom in Myanmar declined dramatically, as the
government ramped up its censorship ahead of elections
expected in November 2020. The government has shut down
mobile internet access in parts of Rakhine and Chin States since
June 2019, taking over a million people offline. Moreover,
authorities ordered service providers to block independent and
regionally based news outlets in March 2020. The military and
ruling party continued manipulating online content, while users
were hesitant to discuss sensitive topics such as gender, the
predominantly Muslim Rohingya ethnic group, and conflicts in
Rakhine, Shan, and Kachin. Worryingly, some individuals who
criticized the government online faced prosecutions and even
prison time under a range of laws, including the repressive
Telecommunications Law.
