During the SIM card re-registration process, a substantial amount of personal data, including name, NRC number, photo, address, and more, is requested. Some telecom operators requested to add the personal social media account links. Consequently, the SIM registration process indirectly supports SAC’s mass surveillance mechanism. SAC announced that SIM cards must be properly registered, and unregistered SIM cards will be deactivated in March, July, and October 2023. On September 26, 2023, SAC announced the sale of SIM cards after registration and the requirement to re-register SIM cards if they are transferred to another individual.
