Formation of Arakan Press Council (APC) A group of independent domestic and exiled Arakanese journalists has established the Arakan Press Council (APC), an independent professional body aimed at strengthening media development, protecting frontline journalists, and promoting press freedom in Arakan State. Formed following a series of consultations, the APC intends to support fact-checking, uphold journalistic ethics, enhance journalists’ safety, and provide capacity-building programmes while remaining independent of governing authorities. The council also plans to engage with the United League of Arakan (ULA) and international press freedom organisations, while serving as a bridge between media organisations and local authorities. Its establishment comes amid worsening security conditions for journalists, who continue to report from conflict zones under the threat of airstrikes, artillery attacks, landmines, and increasing information restrictions. The formation of the APC represents a significant step towards institutionalising independent journalism in Arakan at a time when local media face both physical and political pressures. Beyond providing professional support and safety mechanisms, the council seeks to strengthen media self-regulation and collective representation, reflecting the growing maturity of Arakan’s independent media sector.
