This demonstrates a wide variation between countries, highlighting that children’s experiences differ substantially across contexts, with similar caveats as in relation to overall prevalence. In all countries where these data were collected, unwanted exposure to sexual content was the most common form of technology-facilitated child sexual abuse. This indicator therefore makes up a considerable proportion of the total estimates presented in Table A01. As this report demonstrates, exposure to sexual content can be a precursor to further sexual exploitation and abuse – a way to desensitize children to sexual content or conversation – and can be part of a deliberate and sustained pattern of abuse that persists over long periods of time. The question specifically asked whether “someone” had exposed the child to sexual content they did not want to see.
