Appendix Introductory information This technical appendix provides additional information on the data, measures and analytical methods used in the report Through Children’s Eyes – How digital technologies enable child sexual abuse. It describes the data sources, study sample, variable construction and statistical analyses undertaken to support the findings presented in the report. The analyses draw on data from the Disrupting Harm research project. Disrupting Harm Funded by Safe Online, ECPAT International, INTERPOL and UNICEF Office of Strategy and Evidence – Innocenti (UNICEF Innocenti) partnered to design and implement the Disrupting Harm research project and methodology. The original project concept was developed by Safe Online, providing the foundation for this collaborative effort. This unique partnership uses a multidisciplinary approach to enhance our collective understanding of technology-facilitated child sexual exploitation and abuse and the national response to these forms of violence against children. A combined investment of US$15 million allowed the Disrupting Harm research to be conducted in 13 countries across Eastern and Southern Africa and Southeast Asia from 2019–2022 and in another 12 countries in Latin America, Eastern Europe, Middle East and North Africa and South Asia from 2022–2026. Disrupting Harm implements a mixed-methods methodology that includes: • A nationally representative household survey with ~1000 internet-using 12 to 17-year-olds per country, and one of their parents; • Interviews with justice professionals and front-line workers who worked directly with cases of technology-facilitated child sexual abuse; • Interviews with law enforcement personnel specializing in this crime type; • Interviews with children and young people aged 16–24, who had been subjected to technologyfacilitated child sexual exploitation and abuse in childhood; • A comprehensive analysis of national policy and legislation.
