In GE2025, social media platforms played a vital role in the campaigns of both the PAP
and the opposition403. They provided a space where politicians could engage directly with
citizens, and some observers felt this gave more insight into candidates’ personal sides
than the Meet-the-People Sessions. GE2025 was also the first election in which TikTok was
used extensively, and AI-generated content was documented in the lead-up to the polls404.
Media reported that, in preparation for GE2025, TikTok, Meta, and Google announced
that all AI-generated content would have to be labeled so that audiences were aware of
it405. However, according to CNA, not all of the AI-generated content documented in
the run-up to the election carried such labels406.
While various laws regulate online content, the Parliamentary Elections Act (PEA) played
the most crucial role during GE2025. In addition to the case involving PAS-linked figures
expressing support for the WP, the authorities reportedly issued corrective directions
under the PEA to Meta during the election period, requiring it to disable advertising in
Singapore for three Jom magazine articles407. Two of these articles criticized the PAP,
while the third expressed support for the opposition WP.
The two articles that expressed negative sentiments toward the PAP were “Is Shan a Good
Bad Cop?” and “Affordability in the Lion City: Is Singapore’s Public Housing Model Built
to Last?” The first examines K. Shanmugam’s role in defending the government’s and
the PAP’s reputation during his tenure as Minister for Law. The second questions
the long-term sustainability of Singapore’s widely praised public housing model.
The article, viewed as favorable toward the WP, titled “The System Has Stopped Evolving:
Why Harpreet Singh Joined the Opposition,” explained why the prominent lawyer and
Supreme Court Senior Counsel Harpreet Singh Nehal decided to join the WP for GE2025.
