On race and religion, the WP was linked to a claim by hardline, Malaysia-based Singaporean Muslim preacher Noor Deros. Ahead of GE2025, Deros publicly demanded that political parties adopt a Muslim ideology and oppose LGBTQ+ rights and feminism in exchange for his support. He claimed that the WP was the only party to respond to his demands and that he had met all of the WP’s Malay candidates391. WP Secretary-General Pritam Singh later clarified that Noor Deros was “sadly mistaken” in believing that WP would advance his agenda in Parliament 392 . He explained that Deros had made an unannounced appearance at a meeting between WP members and religious leaders, where he presented a list of demands393. Nevertheless, the PAP continued to raise the issue in Parliament even after GE2025, framing it as a matter of “foreign interference.”394 Some observers have suggested that this may be part of the PAP’s longer-term strategy to undermine the WP’s credibility ahead of the next election395.
