If the Singapore government issues a POFMA correction order for a social media post
and the author does not comply, it can direct social media platforms to label the content
instead. This occurred in September 2025, when the government ordered American
comedian Sammy Obeid to correct his posts on X (formerly Twitter), Facebook, and
Instagram381. After he did not comply, the government instructed Meta and X to issue
a “correction notice” to users in Singapore382, 383. The posts in question concerned his claim
that his shows in Singapore were cancelled because they referenced the Israel-Palestine
conflict384.
Although the 2025 General Election (GE2025) took place in May, POFMA was not directly
used against narratives that could damage the PAP’s reputation, unlike during the 2020
General Election385, 386. In GE2025, the opposition Workers’ Party (WP) appeared to be
specifically targeted, but through more sophisticated tactics. These included the use
of race and religion, content manipulation, online attacks by bots and fake social media
accounts, and the leaking of private messages.
Andre Low, a WP candidate, was targeted through the leak of his private Telegram
messages, which were posted on Facebook and Reddit on April 29, 2025387. Many of
the messages dated from the COVID-19 pandemic period and contained strong language
about the government, Singapore’s COVID-19 tracking app TraceTogether, and a resident
he met at a Meet-the-People session who had obtained his mobile number and called
