In 2024, the peaceful protests in Myanmar can be categorized into four main groups based on the
participants and their goals:
• Group 1 - Protesters opposing the military coup and supporting federal democracy and the
Spring Revolution.
• Group 2 - Supporters of the Myanmar military (Tatmadaw) and nationalist groups.
• Group 3 - Local community members, primarily in conflict-affected areas.
• Group 4 - Workers, especially working in industrial zones
The groups supporting federal democracy and the Spring Revolution are the ones leading peaceful
protests the most, despite the Myanmar military's arrests and oppression. Supporters of the Myanmar
military and nationalist groups are mainly protesting in urban areas under the military's protection. This
group includes not only the military supporters and nationalist groups but also locals, clergy, and
government officials who are forced to join the protests. The local communities consist of ordinary
citizens who are peacefully expressing their political views and the challenges they face. The final group
comprises workers who engage in peaceful protests to resolve conflicts between employers and
employees.
We will continue to examine the monthly and regional patterns of peaceful protests by each group, as
well as the specific issues they demanded.
Group 1 - Protesters opposing the military coup and supporting federal democracy and the
Spring Revolution

revolution have contributed to 2,846 peaceful protests in 2024. Among these, 2,286 protests took place
in Sagaing, accounting for 80% of the total nationwide. Peaceful protests are also ongoing in regions
such as Yangon, Tanintharyi, Magway, Ayeyarwady, Mandalay, and Kachin states.
