Analysis on Trends, Regional Variations and Issues In this report, we primarily focus on examining the changes in peaceful protests within Myanmar throughout 2024, both by month and region. It highlights the variations in protest activity across different regions, as well as the specific issues and demands that were raised during these demonstrations. In 2024, the patterns of peaceful protests in Myanmar showed fluctuations across the months, indicating how the political landscape and key events, such as significant anniversaries and opposition movements, directly influenced the frequency and intensity of the protests throughout the year. In January, February, and March, these months saw the highest number of protests, with over 300 being recorded. In January, the protests were particularly high due to the several military-sponsored protests in major cities against the MNDAA and the escalation of protests by anti-coup protesters demanding the continuation of 1027 Operation. In February, protests marking the third anniversary of the coup, with 66 cities participating in silent strikes, alongside ongoing protests organized by the military supporters and nationalist groups, led to high numbers. In March, the opposition to the People's Military Service Law fueled strong protests, which contributed to the increased number of demonstrations. While the monthly number of protests decreased to around 200 between April and December, the majority were organized by strike committees in Sagaing Region. In June, a slight increase occurred due to protests marking Aung San Suu Kyi's birthday, with more people participating in the demonstrations. In September, an uptick in protests was observed related to the demand for the UN to continue appointing Myanmar's representatives, particularly the call to appoint Ambassador U Kyaw Moe Tun as Myanmar's permanent representative to the United Nations.
