1.5 Myanmar as a Federal Country
A similar trend—though slightly lower than the support for democracy—is observed
regarding federalism, with 77 percent saying it is important for Myanmar to become a
federal state. This perception is shared among respondents across both states and
regions. However, while respondents from Magway and Sagaing express strong
support for federalism, their levels of support are even higher than those from the
states, whereas respondents from Yangon city show more reservation, with only 28
percent indicating it is “very important”.
