Fieldworkers Note Kachin Human Rights Watch (KHRW) collects documentation from community leaders on the ground in Kachin State. Since the coup in 2021, risks have increased as the military junta targets civilians and field workers for sharing the truth about the violence they face. Among the many challenges are communication blackouts that deliberately disrupt and intercept the flow of information. People are constantly fleeing their villages to seek safety in remote and rural areas. After receiving updates, KHRW fieldworkers speak with the community to confirm reported cases and gather testimony and photos from survivors and victims. Though it is not always possible, KHRW makes every effort to share the experiences of communities affected by the ongoing conflict. The data and evidence presented in this report are a testament to the courage of those who spoke to us in their desire for justice. It is worth noting that, while this report seeks to provide an overview of the scenario as described by KHRW fieldworkers and the affected communities who shared their experiences, there remain issues outside its scope. For example, rising criminal and drug-related incidents pose protection concerns in urban areas, and ongoing road and flight closures create access and mobility constraints that affect humanitarian operations and aid delivery. There are also concerns surrounding the trafficking of both illegal substances and people, which constitute international crimes and warrant scrutiny.
