Taken together, these findings suggest that the state made some effort to alter
visual material used to present the Shwe Kokko crackdown before publication. So
while the evidence shows these alterations, it is difficult to determine the exact
reason or intent behind these observed discrepancies.
5 CONCLUSION
The Shwe Kokko demolition series has shown an evident pattern of discrepancies
between the state’s reported narrative and visuals compared with Myanmar
Witness’s analysis of the available evidence. In the early phase of the crackdown
campaign, the demolitions broadly aligned with the state’s maps and published
reports. However, from July 2026, Myanmar Witness observed discrepancies,
including mismatches between reported and geolocated demolished buildings,
changes to roofs, building height alterations and the use of AI-edited imagery.
